How to choose your first automation

Start with a repeated task, a clear input and a result someone can check.

Look for repetition with a stable shape

A good first candidate happens often, starts in a recognisable way and ends with an output your team can judge. A standard order draft is easier to define than an open-ended business decision.

Count the exception cases

List the missing fields, unusual customers and tool failures that make the task harder. If exceptions dominate the work, improve the process before automating it.

Agree the acceptance test

Choose representative examples, the allowed actions and the reviewer. Measure the current effort so an improvement can be demonstrated rather than assumed.
